Along with the speeches, and giving thanks to what a wonderful God we serve, they also gave thanks for all you volunteers..... In addition they had a three man band that played some good music and they served a Thanksgiving dinner which I thought was appropriate, don't you.
Anyway, the most interesting thing I observed is that all the people that received letters of appreciation were churches and other organizations that band together to deliver meals.
We are the only ones in the area that I observed, there at least, that represent a whole city. We are the volunteers from the City of Kyle......now I thought that was really fascinating. That our little town of Kyle has such caring and loving people as yourselves to come out and serve the community. I say HOORAY for KYLE and THANKS TO YOU!!!!!!!!!
Hey if anyone has an in with the Kyle paper, maybe that needs to be made known> Our volunteers come from Kyle and near areas, from all walks of life, to serve the community. People who work and take their lunch time to deliver, stay at home moms with home schoolers come out and deliver, retired people are out their volunteering, people on their days off taking time out to serve. I just really think that says a lot about you!
So in the New Year, we are going to do our own Meals on Wheels appreciation in the Old renovated City Hall. Adell Hurst is working out the details with Community in Action, so I will keep you all informed. A little pizza party, I thought since we have several young people whole also ride along giving service to their community.
For other people out there reading this…. Yes we need volunteers. Meals on Wheels in Kyle currently serves lunches to about 18 families in the immediate area but we are in need of more volunteers so we can service a larger area of Kyle. For awhile now we have limited our area of service so that the volunteers would not get burned out and so that it would not be a hugh gasoline expensive on the volunteers. But now we are trying to increase the client base, more and more people are in need. So more volunteers are in need.
Meals on Wheels is affliated with Community in Action based out of Smithville . The meals come in nice and hot in big containers from Austin and Delia (our site manager) prepares the meals in individual container plates for us volunteers to deliver them to the families in Kyle. The people who receive the meals are shut in's or are limited by age, and or disability in what they can do.
Volunteers pick up the meals from Delia at 11:00am
at the Old newly renovated city hall on the square in Kyle. (on Burleson)
So come out and ride along with any of the volunteers and see if this is something you would like to do.
THANK YOU EVERYONE>

Volunteers needed

It has been forever since I wrote on this site. I have forgotten how to do this. But what I have not fogotten is how much I appreciate our volunteers with Meals on Wheels.

One such volunteeer got me to thinking about how much I really do appreciate everyone of you.

Jennifer Martinez had been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for about a year and a half now. She does this during her work day. Her company Five Star Concrete out of Uhland Texas, graciously allows her an hour and half for her lunch and she uses that time once a month to serve meals to the seniors of Kyle. I want to give a big thank you to her and Five Star Concrete to their service in the community.

Other volunteer Maggie Gillespie and Amy Almeida also give up their lunch time to carry meals to Kyle residents.

I have other volunteers like David and Sarah Lyle who have been serving for awhile now and do it every single week. And Polly Summers who pitches in whenever called upon.

An extra big thank for so many of our other volunteers who have been with the Meals on Wheels program for three, four or more years like, Joan and Tom Searcy, Jane Kirkham, Janette Hall, Janie Vasquez, Doris Breslar, Celeste Plunkett, Fred and Sharon Rothert, Maribel Espinosa, Sandra Green, Marisa Ferro. Thank you for your dependability and dedication.

We have several mom's with kiddos who help out each month, like Kerri Summers, Jan Sills, Tami Larsen, Tahrea Smith, Chantel Russell, Ann Smith and others who make this a family outing with their gift of giving.

Want to welcome new volunteers Scott Haberbosch, Mary Fleming, Cheryl and Larry Jones who have already started out with a bang and helping almost once a week.

It may seem like we have alot of volunteers but we cover two routes, Monday thru Friday. So we need two people each day. Some can oonly volunteer once a week but as I have mentioned several do so much more.

Wether you can give one day a month or one day a week we need help!!! Just this summer we have lost five volunteers who had been with us for along time. As with any volunteer program people move, or get jobs or time restraints prohibt them from volunteering. I am hoping that you may have at least one day that you can offer to your community and it's seniors.

If so just contact me, Shelley Pulliam 405-3922.

Thank you!!!!!

New Volunteers

It really is exciting to see how Kyle is changing. I really need to get out there and take some pictures of everything. I have lived in Kyle for twenty five years now. I wish I would have taken pictures of places way back then and compare them to the now. Anyway, alls I can say is wow what a change.
With growth comes all kinds of opportunities and one opportunity is the giving of your time. Volunteering is a special way to give back. I don't know about you but I have been blessed in so many ways that giving back just seems such a little thing to do.
We have had a turn over of volunteers this month, some had to leave us and new ones have joined us. I want to say welcome and THANK YOU to Mary Fleming and Melissa Hardy who have joined us this past month.
We still need volunteers. If you can give even just an hour once a month during the lunch time please let us know.
You can call Delia at 431-9150 or Shelley 405-3922.
THANK YOU

GIVING THANKS

What wonderful volunteers we have participating in our Meals on Wheels program. I have been gone on a wonderful road trip exploring these great United States we have and came back to a program where everything is taken care of. Everyone is so thoughtful and sincere about all they do. I give thanks for each of you.
I received this email and wanted to share with others.

On Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 1:46 PM, Colleen Robishaw wrote:
Shelley,

I wanted you to know we delivered our first meals today. We are available at that time.

We were so impressed with the organization of it all. We're going to have to brush up on some Spanish phrases.

Thanks again!
Colleen

Thank you Colleen and thank the Lord for all our volunteers.
So if you are interested in volunteering just let me know.
You can call Meals on Wheels between 10 - 12 am Monday thru Friday at
431-9150 or just come by the Vet Center in Kyle on Front St. and talk with Delia.

The Look of Meals on Wheels

Well here it is the last day of August. Last night I attended an Events and Activities Information Fair for the Hays Area Christian Homeschoolers. What an honor this was. I never knew homeschooling was so exciting and had such a vast network of programming and activities. I want to thank the Hays Area Christian Homeschoolers for allowing me to be apart of this.

I presented information regarding volunteering oppertunities with Meals on Wheels in the Kyle area and WOW what a response. I had almost twenty people sign up for more information stating, that this may very well be of interest to them and their children. What a fabulous way to be an example for our children in living out our faith in the act of compassion and giving.

COMPASSION IN ACTION

VOLUNTEER TO DELIVER MEALS
Delivering meals for Meals on Wheels is the most adaptable volunteer opportunity in the Kyle area.

Meals on Wheels came to Kyle 40 years ago. The Kyle folks we served in 1968 are probably no longer with us, but the legacy of this service is remembered by families who almost daily tell us about their homebound family members being served meals. Some elderly residents tell us they served as a volunteers and as they aged, they became users of the service.

5,700 hot meals were delivered to Kyle area residents by volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers last year. Another 1,300 hot meals were served to persons over 60 years of age who come to our Meals on Wheels Congregate Meal site at 103 S. Front St. (formerly Kyle Police Department).

The volunteers use their own time and resources to deliver this valuable service to the homebound elderly in the Kyle area. The drivers are your friends and neighbors.

As summer approaches some of these dedicated volunteer drivers will be taking time off for vacations and family events. They deserve to take a break because they are so dedicated to seeing that the elderly of Kyle receive a hot meal, a few kind words and even a hug now and then. In many instances the person who delivers the meals may be the only human contact the elderly person has that day.

As more elderly Kyle residents request meal delivery, our need for drivers increases. During the past year, as requests were made for more meals, we split the route, reducing the time it takes to deliver meals to under one hour, since some people who work deliver meals on their lunch hour.

Meals on Wheels are not an option; these meals sustain life and we are honored to provide this service to the most fragile Kyle area residents. We hope never to skip a day of delivery or to turn away a single elderly person. There are no income guidelines for this service. Our volunteers have provided a great service in keeping the elderly nourished and able to live in their own homes, independently and with dignity.

We need your help to accomplish this.

If you can deliver meals one day a month or one day a week, we can use you. You can train with our volunteers to learn the routes and the delivery routine. If you cannot deliver, donations are needed to keep this service available. 2,600 hot meals are delivered to 18 Central Texas cities/towns each week. Gasoline prices have caused a huge increase in food and delivery costs.

We are thankful to live in a wonderful city that recognizes need, donates monetarily and provides space for Meals on Wheels, as the City of Kyle has done for many years.

For more information, call Adell Hurst, Volunteer Administrative Coordinator

@ 268-1631 or 618-1631.

To volunteer, call Shelley Pulliam, Volunteer Driver Coordinator at 405-3922 .

To apply for meals, call Delia Bernal, Site Manager, (512) 431-9150 between 9am & 12:30pm, Monday through Friday.

To donate to Meals on Wheels, send your tax deductible gifts to: Combined Community Action, Senior Nutrition Program, 165 W.
